In 1998, Denmark awarded its most prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize for lifetime achievement in music to Germany's greatest singing-actress, soprano Hildegard Behrens:

" The Leónie Sonning Music Prize 1998 is awarded to Hildegard Behrens for her artistic, thoughtful, and richly-faceted portrayals of the greatest soprano roles in the operatic repertory. Through her great and euphonious voice, her dramatic intensity and stage presence, her radiance and authority - manifest in her performances in the world's great opera houses, Hildegard Behrens, has set for her generation the standard for the interpretation of these extremely demanding and intensely dramatic roles."

 


As the above list shows, Léonie Sonning Music Prize winners are among the most illustrious personalities in the world of music.  Some names may not be instantly recognizable to the man on the street - but anyone who knows of them cannot but sing their praises. Can anyone deny the valuable contributions of the likes of Igor Stravinsky or Leonard Bernstein or Jean-Pierre Rampal or Birgit Nilsson (to name but a few) - composer, conductor, instrumentalist, singer - all of them cultural icons and artists of the highest order whose music and music-making are among the most sublime delights of civilization.
